Peripheral Venous Catheterization

The low-cost simulator was manufactured based on the model presented at the IV Latin American Congress of Clinical Simulation held in Chile in 2015. It consists of a representation of part of an upper limb in which it is possible to palpate the vein, insert a needled device with blood backflow (simulated), install the device, secure it, and administer volume.

Construction

Materials

• Pool noodle 30 cm
• Tourniquet 34 cm
• Red liquid food coloring 3 ml
• IV administration sets (simple or burette) 2 units
• IV fluid bottles 2 units
• Blackout fabric 40 cm x 20 cm
• Wide transparent adhesive tape 1 unit
• Utility knife 1 unit
• Scissors 1 unit
• Syringe 3 ml 1 unit
• Needle 1 unit

Instructions

1- Create a base from the pool noodle by cutting a thin layer lengthwise

2- Make a lengthwise cut in the upper part to accommodate the tourniquet

3- Place the tourniquet in the opening made, securing it with adhesive tape at the ends

4- Insert dye into the full IV fluid bottle using the syringe and needle, and attach the IV administration set

5- At one end of the tourniquet, connect an IV administration set attached to an empty IV fluid bottle, and at the other end, the IV administration set connected to the bottle with pigmented IV fluid, filling the circuit
